MCM Cabin

About the project

A compact secondary dwelling built into a steep, terraced site.

The construction of this compact yet sophisticated secondary dwelling on a large, steep block in North Manly was expertly designed to take advantage of the site’s challenging topography. By working with the existing terraced levels, the architects created a 60-square-meter home along with a carport, all nestled beneath the canopy of two mature angophora trees. The build required meticulous excavation, careful slab preparation, and structural integration with the site’s contours to ensure stability while minimising impact on the surrounding landscape.

With an emphasis on craftsmanship and efficiency, the dwelling combines lightweight framing with extensive glazing and custom joinery, creating a sense of openness within its small footprint. The exterior deck and large openings were designed to connect seamlessly with the garden, enhancing the home’s treehouse-like character. The colour palette, inspired by the surrounding angophoras, extends into the finishes and joinery, anchoring the construction within its natural context.
